φῶς · phōs · appears 72 times in the New Testament
In one line: God's truth and presence, making things visible as they are.
Once again, Jesus spoke to the people and said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.
John 8:12
Phōs is light — what makes seeing possible, used for God's truth, His presence, and the moral clarity they bring.
The New Testament uses phōs for physical light and, far more, for God Himself and the revelation He gives. Jesus claims the word for Himself — “I am the light of the world” — and John sets it against darkness as the basic contrast between truth and falsehood, life and death.
Phōs derives from an old root meaning to shine or make manifest, and the emphasis falls on disclosure: light is what makes things appear as they are. The Septuagint used it for Hebrew or, the light God speaks into being before there is a sun to carry it.
Biblical light is less about brightness than about exposure — it shows what is there. That is why “walking in the light” in 1 John leads immediately to honesty about sin rather than to a feeling of illumination.
Phōs (G5457) appears 72 times in the New Testament and gives English “photograph” — literally, writing with light.
Light describes both what God is — “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all” — and what He does, making Himself known. Calling disciples “the light of the world” then makes the church derivative: it shines because something else is shining on it.
Bring one thing you have kept in the dark into the light — named honestly to God, and if it involves someone else, to them. Exposure is how light heals rather than how it shames.
